Little Hippies was fortunate enough to be involved in a really cool opportunity for small businesses in Calgary. AlbertaBoostR is a platform where start-ups, like ourselves, can raise both awareness and funds for their project. They call this getting a “boost”. Little Hippies made an online campaign through AlbertaBoostR and then began promoting our goals and cause to our families, friends, their friends and so on! The goal for Little Hippies was to raise $2000 through our crowd funding site which would help us to fund our upcoming Summer Camp for Special Needs Children. We also wanted to be able to provide two low income children with Special Needs to with a sponsorship program so that they would be able to come to our camp for free!
In addition to raising money through our campaign, there was also another bonus ‘competition’…. whoever could raise the most social media hype for their campaign within a 7 day period would win an additional $2000 from ATB to “boost” their cause! You may have noticed the #LittleHippiesforElevatorYYC all over our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts. We asked our friends to share our posts via the web to their friends and word quickly spread. On the 7th day of the competition, Little Hippies found out that we had won the social media contest!!! We were so proud and thank EVERYONE who shared our post, retweeted our hashtag, or instagrammed our picture. We did this together! Thank you for your patience and for showing your support for our cause.
But wait… there’s more to it…
Out of all of the small businesses that had created AlbertaBoostR campaigns and were competing in the social media contest, only 5 were chosen to present (the very next day might I add!) at The Elevator Event. Imagine you are hopping in to an elevator at your work. The head of the entire corporation suddenly steps in next to you. The two of you are in the elevator and you have 30 seconds to pitch him or her your great idea and make a convincing argument as to why they should help you out. This was The Elevator Event in a nutshell. Each company had 30 seconds to “pitch” their business idea to a crowd of bankers, entrepreneurs and event participants. Each person in the crowd was given a $20 voucher from ATB which they could use to “vote” for their favourite campaign. The campaigns ranged from a social media app, to a dating & lifestyle website, to…. us! It was very diverse and it was an awesome atmosphere full of creativity, innovation and great small business ideas with big places to go. Little Hippies did really well at this event and it was a big step for us to get out in front of a crowd and talk (briefly), but convincingly about what we were aiming to achieve through our company.
We met so many interesting people, including Leslie Ann Scorgie, best selling author of a number of financial advice books. We even had an opportunity to sit down with Leslie to ask her a few questions and tell her about our business.
Our AlbertaBoostR campaign came to a close yesterday and we would like to share with you all that we managed to raise a total of $3170 through our crowdfunding effort!

We would definitely recommend for anyone with a start-up, small business, or developing idea to participate in the next AlbertaBoostR and Elevator Event.
